Hi, I’m digital design writer Zoë Sessums. Follow along each week as I try my hand at a DIY project in and around my house. I’ll cover the inspiration, expert advice, and step-by-step plans of everything from challenging builds to simple renovations. This month’s undertaking: a deck!
Earlier this summer, Yelp released a report of top backyard trends of 2021. Among the terms experiencing a meteoric rise in interest among consumers, the searches for outdoor decks were up 373% this year and increased by 64% between February and March. Turns out building and enjoying a deck wasn’t just something on my mind. Since Yelp tapped Jeremiah Brent, interior designer and star of HGTV’s Rock the Block, for his expert insights and tips, I knew he was the perfect person to source a little extra advice for my own deck-building journey—especially when it comes to adding those final touches and furnishings.
Zoë Sessums: You and Nate Berkus recently had a screened-in porch created at your home in Montauk, New York. Where did you find inspiration for the look and design?
Jeremiah Brent: When we were in Georgia filming Rock the Block, we ended up screening in the porch, creating another avenue for indoor-outdoor living for the future homeowners. We loved the way that space felt and began our Yelp search for Montauk contractors before we were even home from the competition. In the realm of design, we wanted the space to simply feel like an extension of our home. By carrying the same fabrics, tones, and finishes throughout, the transition between the spaces feels seamless.
